Bruchsal
The château of Bruchsal is the only baroque palace of a prince-bishop on the Upper Rhine. It is famous especially for its impressive stairwell by master-builder Balthasar Neumann.
Bruchsal – A modern city with a long history
The city of Bruchsal is located in the “Tuscany of Germany”, between the Rhine Plain and Kraichgau. Asparagus, strawberries and wine flourish here. The modern center with a thousand-year history offers great shopping and a rich cultural life. With their historic buildings and idyllic corners, the city's quarters have retained their village-like charm.
The baroque palace in Bruchsal is a special treasure, one of the most beautiful in Germany and the only baroque ecclesiastic residence along the Upper Rhine. Prince-bishop Cardinal Damian Hugo von Schönborn laid the foundation stone for it in 1722. Almost completely destroyed shortly before the end of the Second World War, it was reconstructed in the 1970s, restoring it to its former glory with Balthasar Neumann's famous staircase design. The German Nickelodeon Museum in the palace, which exhibits musical machines of all kinds, is also worth a visit.

The Civic Center in the inner city is the heart of Bruchsal's cultural life, and is home to Badische Landesbühne, a professional theater group. Roughly 20,000 school children avail of the wide range of educational opportunities in the city. Bruchsal also boasts Baden-Wuerttemberg's largest School of Music and Arts, and the State Fire Department School, as a central institute of education for the state's local fire departments. Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences' Bruchsal Campus houses the Institute for Energy-Efficient Mobility.
Bruchsal also has plenty to offer when it comes to sports. In the Kraichgau Ironman Triathlon, it hosts one of Baden-Wuerttemberg's largest sporting events. There are sport clubs and swimming pools for sports fans. And the attractive Kraichgau landscape, with its extensive forests, meadows, fields and lakes, is ideal for exploring on foot or by bicycle.
As an attractive business location, Bruchsal is home to both global corporations and medium-sized companies that are among the market leaders in their niches worldwide. Together, they employ over 20,000 people. One of Bruchsal's key benefits is its ideal location for transportation and accessibility thanks to good highway and major infrastructure route connections.
